Who was Marquis de Lafayette?​

Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette was born into a family of noble military lineage on September 6, 1757 in a chateau in Chavaniac, France. His father, Michel du Motier, was a colonel in the French Army who fought in the Seven Years’ War and was killed at the Battle of Minden in August 1759.

So insistent was Lafayette for aid to the Americans that one day Count de Maurepas said in the royal council: “It is fortunate for the King, that Lafayette does not take it into his head to strip Versailles of its furniture, to send to his dear Americans; as his Majesty would be unable to refuse it.”

What did Lafayette do in the Battle of Versaille?​

Lafayette was named the commander of the National Guard. On October 5, a hungry Parisian mob descended on the palace of Versaille, demanding bread. Lafayette’s charisma and his well-established sympathy with the common people helped to calm the crowd and allay their anger for the royal family.

Born in 1757, Lafayette was a young, handsome, rich and brave French aristocrat who defied his own king to enter the Revolutionary War in America to support the cause of freedom in the New World.

Why was the Marquis de Lafayette sent to Valley Forge?​

When winter had ended, the Marquis de Lafayette was sent from Valley Forge by General Washington to check on the British forces in Philadelphia. While he was encamped at fooren Hill, later named Lafayette Hill, a British General, William Howe, learned of Lafayette’s presence on the hill.
What happened to General Lafayette after the Battle of Yorktown?
A French fleet and several additional American armies joined the siege, and on October 19 Cornwallis surrendered. The British cause was lost. Lafayette was hailed as the “Hero of Two Worlds,” and on returning to France in 1782 he was promoted to maréchal de camp (brigadier general).

How old was Lafayette when he became a major general?​

With no combat experience and not yet 20 years old, Lafayette was nonetheless appointed a major general in the Continental Army, and he quickly struck up a lasting friendship with the American commander in chief, George Washington.
