Who was Juan Bautista de Anza?​

His expeditions brought hundreds of settlers to the Golden State, who founded the cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Jose. The son of Juan Bautista de Anza I, he was born in July 1736 in Fronteras, Sonora, Mexico. In 1752 he enlisted in the army at the Presidio of Fronteras and advanced rapidly becoming a captain by 1760.

What is the Juan de Anza Trail?​

The Juan De Anza Trail is a National Park Service Historic Trail that illustrates the interweaving of the three elements of the Spanish plan for colonization of its norther frontiers: the presidio, the mission, and the pueblo.
Spanish military leader who headed several exploratory expeditions through northern Mexico and California. In 1774 Anza established an overland route connecting Sonora in northern Mexico to Monterey in California.
What happened to Anza’s father?
In 1738 Anza’s father submitted a plan for opening a route from Sonora to California, but in 1739 the elder Anza lost his life in a campaign against the Apaches and the plan was dropped. When Anza was 18 he volunteered for military service and rapidly rose to the rank of captain.
