Taj Mahal, 22 yılda tamamlanmış olup 1653 yılında inşa edilmiştir. Yamuna Nehri'nin güney kıyısında bulunan bu muazzam yapı, ziyaretçileri simetrisi, yapısal güzelliği, karmaşık yazıları ve detaylarıyla etkilemektedir.

"Jilaukhana", Taj Mahal'in yapıcısı olan Şah Cihan tarafından Mughal sanatına kazandırılmış bir mimari öğedir. Bu fikir, ziyaretçilere atlarından veya fillerinden inip, kalabalıktan uzaklaşıp komplekse girmeden önce hazırlanabilecekleri bir alan sağlamak amacıyla ortaya çıkarılmıştır.

Taj Mahal'in güneyinde yer alan bahçesi, dört adet kadirandan oluşmaktadır. Bu kadiranlar, cenneti temsil eden dört "nehir" ile bölünmüştür ve bu nehirler merkezi bir havuza akar. Bahçeler ve nehirler, Yamuna Nehri tarafından kompleks bir yeraltı su sistemi aracılığıyla beslenmektedir.
