What is patellar tendinopathy?

Patellar tendinopathy (often called ‘jumpers knee’) is a relatively common soft tissue injury. It affects the tendon at the front of your knee, below your kneecap (the patellar tendon). It is more common in people who take part in sports that mainly involve jumping and running, such as volleyball, tennis, football and badminton.

How do doctors diagnose patellar tendon injuries?

Your doctor may suggest one or more of the following imaging tests: X-rays. X-rays help to exclude other bone problems that can cause knee pain. Ultrasound. This test uses sound waves to create an image of your knee, revealing tears in your patellar tendon.

Can you get patellar tendinitis if you don’t jump?

Can you get patellar tendinitis if you don’t jump?
However, even people who don’t participate in jumping sports can get patellar tendinitis. For most people, treatment of patellar tendinitis begins with physical therapy to stretch and strengthen the muscles around the knee. Patellar tendinitis causes pain in the patellar tendon, which runs from the kneecap (patella) to the shinbone (tibia).

What are the treatment options for patellar tendon rupture?

What are the treatment options for patellar tendon rupture?
An ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injection into the sheath around the patellar tendon may help relieve pain. But these types of drugs can also weaken tendons and make them more likely to rupture. Platelet-rich plasma injection. This type of injection has been tried in some people with chronic patellar tendon problems. Studies are ongoing.
What is patellar tendinopathy? Patellar tendinopathy — also known as patellar tendinosis or jumper’s knee — is a disorder of the patellar tendon. The patellar tendon is a flexible band of tissue that connects your kneecap to your shin bone and helps you straighten your leg.

What are the different types of patellar tendon rupture?

Patellar tendon rupture- There are two possible types of rupture: a complete tear and a partial tear. The patellar tendon often ruptures proximally, near the patellar origin. A complete tear leads to a high riding patella and requires surgical repair while a partial tear leads to tendinopathy and can be treated conservatively.

How do you diagnose a torn patellar tendon?

Diagnosis. People who tear the tendon will be unable to extend their knee against gravity, and unable to perform a straight leg raise test. The examiner can usually feel the gap in the tendon, just below the kneecap. An X-ray will be obtained, as a patellar fracture can cause similar symptoms, and should be excluded as a possible diagnosis.

What is the function of the patella in the knee?

What is the function of the patella in the knee?
Patellar ligament (lateral view) The function of the patella is to increase the length of the lever arm of the patellar tendon and therefore allow quadriceps femoris to exert a higher moment around the axis of rotation of the knee for a given level of muscle contraction than in the absence of a patella.

Patellar tendinopathy, also known as patellar tendinosis or jumper's knee, is a common soft tissue injury that affects the patellar tendon located below the kneecap. This condition is often seen in individuals who participate in sports involving jumping and running, such as volleyball, tennis, football, and badminton.

Diagnosis of patellar tendon injuries typically involves imaging tests such as X-rays to rule out bone issues causing knee pain and ultrasound to visualize tears in the patellar tendon. However, it's important to note that individuals who do not engage in jumping sports can still develop patellar tendinitis. Treatment usually begins with physical therapy aimed at strengthening and stretching the muscles around the knee to alleviate pain in the patellar tendon that connects the kneecap to the shinbone.

In the case of a patellar tendon rupture, treatment options may include ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injections to help with pain relief, although these injections may potentially weaken the tendons. Another option is platelet-rich plasma injection, which is being studied for its effectiveness in chronic patellar tendon issues.

There are two types of patellar tendon ruptures: complete tears, which may require surgical repair and result in a high riding patella, and partial tears, which can lead to tendinopathy and might be treated conservatively.

When diagnosing a torn patellar tendon, individuals will experience difficulty extending the knee against gravity and may be unable to perform a straight leg raise test. Physical examination may reveal a gap in the tendon below the kneecap. X-rays are typically obtained to differentiate between a patellar fracture and a tendon tear.

The patella plays a crucial role in the knee joint by increasing the leverage of the patellar tendon. This anatomical feature allows the quadriceps femoris muscle to generate a higher moment around the knee's axis of rotation during muscle contraction compared to when the patella is absent.
