What is Mission San Jose?​

Spanish missions were not churches, but communities with the church the focus. Mission San José captures a transitional moment in history, frozen in time. Mission San Jose turned 300 years old in 2020. We comemmorate Mission San Jose’s tricentennial and remember the stories of the people who walked these grounds 300 years ago.

What is Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo?​

Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo was founded by Franciscan missionary Father Antonio Margil de Jesús in 1720. The mission relocated three times after originally being placed on the east bank of the San Antonio River south of the Mission San Antonio de Valero (The Alamo). Many of the structures on-site before the 1760s were temporary.

Some documents show the name of the Mission as Mission San Jose de Guadalupe but original documents from Father Lasuen’s time show that he named it simply Mission San Jose. The Mission is located approximately 15 miles east of the pueblo of San Jose.

How many Ohlones lived at the Mission San Jose?
Three years after the founding of Mission San Jose, several hundred Ohlones had come to live at the Mission. They were introduced to a new way of life by the Spanish Franciscan missionaries. Thousands of cattle roamed the mission ranges.
Mission San Jose was founded June 11, 1797 by Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen on part of a natural highway from Livermore Valley to San Joaquin Valley. It is the fourteenth of 21 Spanish Missions in Alta California. Visit our Gift Shop and Christian Store to find religious and Christian items.

How did the missionaries at San Jose change the marriage practices?​

The missionaries at San Jose tried to change the marriage practices of the residing Indians. Northern California Indians believed that a couple should live together prior to the joining ceremony to measure compatibility. Divorce and remarriage were acceptable. The missionaries however would have none of this.
