What is HSV-1 and how common is it?

HSV-1 is also an important cause of genital herpes. Around 140 million people between the ages of 15 and 49 years have a genital HSV-1 infection.

Can HSV-2 be managed with normal life?

“It can be managed within a normal life without the impact that people are afraid of when they haven’t got the disease,” Dr. Handsfield says. However, studies show that a genital or anal infection with HSV-2 increases the risk of HIV infection if you’re exposed to HIV.
What is the recommended dose of acyclovir for the treatment of HSV-1?
For neonatal HSV disease, intravenous acyclovir at 60 mg/kg per day delivered in three divided daily doses is currently recommended (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2003; Kimberlin et al., 2001a).

Can HSV-1 cause brain damage?

In rare cases, infection with HSV-1 or HSV-2 can lead to meningitis (inflammation of the covering of the brain and spinal cord) or encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). Treatment for herpes infections can lessen the frequency or intensity of outbreaks.

What are the symptoms of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1)?

When symptoms do occur, genital herpes is characterised by 1 one or more genital or anal blisters or ulcers. After an initial genital herpes episode, which can be severe, symptoms may recur. However, genital herpes caused by HSV-1 typically does not recur frequently, unlike genital herpes caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2; see below).
What are the complications of herpes zoster (HSV1)?
In immunocompromised people, such as those with advanced HIV infection, HSV-1 can have more severe symptoms and more frequent recurrences. Rarely, HSV-1 infection can also lead to more severe complications such as encephalitis or keratitis (eye infection).
