What is Google Fi?

Google Fi is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) service that provides calls, short message service (SMS) which is also known as text messaging, and mobile broadband using cellular networks and Wi-Fi. As an MVNO, Google Fi operates on T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular networks but is not owned by those companies.

What carrier does Google Fi use?

What networks does Google Fi actually use, then? In the U.S., Fi uses a combination of T-Mobile, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular (so eventually just T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular, since Sprint and T-Mobile are in the process of becoming one and the same).
Unlimited data and texts in the US, plus over 200 international countries or regions. Free calls to over 50 countries, regions, or territories from the US and affordable calls to other destinations. Up to 50 GB of free, unmetered data. Data speed is slowed to 256 kbps after 50 GB of use per member.

Pros and Cons

Do I need a SIM for Google Fi?

Setting up your device Next, Google Fi requires a special SIM card. You can either buy a new phone with this SIM card when you sign up for Fi, or Google will ship you a free SIM card to put in your existing phone and activate.

Does Google Fi work without Wi-Fi?

You’ll no longer be paying for mobile data, and calls and texts will work just as they do on mobile data. You can even continue your phone call as your phone switches between carrier and Wi-Fi networks. There is one caveat: Although Google Fi works with most unlocked phones, they won’t be able to do network switching.
The short answer: yes—for people who only want to pay for the data they use. But for others, Google Fi can easily end up being more expensive than it should be. Google Fi’s single plan gives you unlimited talk and text for a flat fee of $20 a month, plus $10 per GB of data you use in a month, which caps at $60 a month.

Can I keep my phone number if I switch to Google Fi?
Yes, you can bring your current personal number with you to Google Fi or take it with you if you leave. Because some carriers do not allow you to take your number, we’ll check if you can transfer it when you sign up. Your phone number transfer will start once you activate service on your phone.

Does Google Fi give you a phone number?

Yes. When you activate your phone with Project Fi, it will prompt you to either transfer an existing number or to create a new number for you.

Are there hidden fees with Google Fi?

What is unique about Google Fi phone plans? Fi plans are designed to fit your data usage. You can go unlimited or choose to pay only for the data you use—all without contracts or hidden fees.
Flexible vs Unlimited group plan billing In the Flexible plan, calls & texts for the group plan owner is $20/month and each additional group member is $15/month. Shared data is $10/GB for all group members until you reach your Bill Protection level. Unlimited plans are priced on a per-line basis.
