What do you need to know about meningioma?

Causes and Risk Factors of Meningioma. Meningioma Symptoms. Diagnosis of Meningiomas. Meningioma Treatment. A meningioma is a tumor that forms on membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord just inside the skull. Specifically, the tumor forms on the three layers of membranes that are called meninges. These tumors are often slow-growing.

Are there alternative treatments for a meningioma?

Alternative medicine treatments can’t treat meningiomas, but some may help provide relief from treatment side effects or help you cope with the stress of having a meningioma. Alternative medicine therapies that may be helpful include: Acupuncture. Hypnosis. Massage. Meditation. Music therapy. Relaxation exercises.
If it can’t be reached via surgery, radiation therapy may be used. Radiation can shrink the tumor or help prevent it from growing any larger. Radiation can also be used to kill cancer cells if the tumor is malignant. It may also be used on the parts of a tumor the surgeon was unable to remove. Cedars-Sinai: “Meningiomas Brain Tumors.”
What should I do if I have a benign brain tumor?
If the tumor is benign and only a small piece remained, then your doctor may recommend periodic follow-up scans only. In some cases, small leftover tumors may be treated with a form of radiation treatment called stereotactic radiosurgery. If the tumor is atypical or malignant, you’ll likely need radiation.

1 Overview. A meningioma is a tumor that arises from the meninges — the membranes that surround your brain and spinal cord. 2 Symptoms. Signs and symptoms of a meningioma typically begin gradually and may be very subtle at first. 3 Causes. It isn’t clear what causes a meningioma. 4 Risk factors. Radiation treatment. 5 Complications.
What are The racial predilections of meningioma?
African Americans have been observed to have higher rates of meningioma than other ethnic groups in the U.S. Exposure to ionizing radiation, especially high doses, has been associated with a higher incidence of intracranial tumors, particularly meningiomas.

Is obesity a risk factor for meningioma?

Obesity. A high BMI (body mass index) is an established risk factor for many types of cancers, and a higher prevalence of meningiomas among obese persons has been observed in several large studies. But the relationship between obesity and meningiomas is not clear.

Can meningioma cause hydrocephalus?

An intraventricular meningioma may cause a blockage of CSF flow, leading to hydrocephalus. Skull base meningioma grows in the bones that form the bottom of the skull and in the bony ridge in the back of the eyes. These are more difficult to remove surgically than convexity meningiomas.
This type of tumor can cause a loss of smell, and can grow large enough to cause problems with vision. Posterior fossa / petrous meningioma forms on the underside of the brain and accounts for approximately 10 percent of meningiomas. It can press on the cranial nerves, causing facial and hearing problems.
Can suprasellar meningioma come back?
Suprasellar meningioma arises from the base of the skull near the pituitary gland and the optic nerve. Tumors in this area can cause visual problems and dysfunction of the pituitary gland. Recurrent meningioma: Any meningioma may come back. When a meningioma does recur, it may be the same grade or a more aggressive or malignant form.
