Combining nortriptyline or other TCAs with drugs that block acetylcholine (anticholinergic drugs) can cause constipation and even paralyze the intestine (paralytic ileus). Dangerous elevations in blood pressure may occur if TCA’s are combined with clonidine (Catapres, Catapres-TTS).

It is not known whether nortriptyline will affect an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication. It is not known whether nortriptyline passes into breast milk or if it could affect a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Nortriptyline can increase the effects of alcohol, which could be dangerous. This medication may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert. Avoid exposure to sunlight or tanning beds. Nortriptyline can make you sunburn more easily.

These side effects of nortriptyline aren’t very common, but they’re potentially serious when they do occur. If you experience any of these, contact your doctor about them right away. Less common (but potentially serious) side effects include: Blurred vision. Confusion or delirium. Constipation (especially in seniors)
