Both tramadol oral tablets are also available as generic drugs. The immediate-release tablet is also available as the brand-name drug Ultram. Generic drugs usually cost less than the brand-name version. In some cases, they may not be available in all strengths or forms as the brand-name drug.

Tramadol immediate-release tablet: If you have severe kidney problems, your doctor will likely prescribe you 50–100 mg every 12 hours. The maximum dosage is 200 mg per day. Tramadol extended-release tablet: If you have severe kidney problems, you should not use these forms of tramadol.

Tramadol is a narcotic-like pain reliever. Tramadol is used to treat moderate to severe pain. The extended-release form of tramadol is for around-the-clock treatment of pain. The extended-release form of tramadol is not for use on an as-needed basis for pain.
