If you’re looking for a relatively small dog that doesn’t require a whole lot of work, then a Basset Hound may be a great choice for you. With their short legs and long ears, these dogs are very endearing and charming and tend to be extremely patient as well.
Do Basset Hounds drool a lot?
Bassets have a loud bay that they use when excited on the trail. The Basset needs mild daily exercise, which can be satisfied by walking on leash or playing in the yard. When did the basset hound become a breed?
The AKC originally recognized this dog breed in 1935 as a member of the hound class. It is widely thought that, as a hunting dog, the Basset Hound takes only a backseat to the Bloodhound regarding a sense of smell and tracking ability.
Do Basset Hounds shed a lot?
The short fur of a Basset Hound is actually a little misleading because these dogs require a moderate amount of brushing, approximately 2 to 3 times per week. Regular grooming is extremely important and because the hair is short they actually shed quite frequently.

With proper genetic screening, the Basset Hound can be a healthy breed. However, some of the illnesses that are known to affect this breed, in particular, are GDV (also known as bloat or gastric torsion), hip dysplasia, glaucoma, or ear infections because of their long droopy years.

This mark creates a cute illusion of a mask that surrounds the eyes area of the Basset Hound and typically extends to their ears, excluding its middle forehead down to its nose. This generally occurs in red, lemon, mahogany, and brown colored Basset Hounds.

The basset hound comes from as far back as the 1500s when the pre-revolutionary French were using low slung, heavy-bodied hounds to trail rabbits. The word “bas” is French for “low” befitting the basset hound’s stature.
