How fast can a peregrine falcon dive?

One of the world’s fastest birds; in power-diving from great heights to strike prey, the Peregrine may possibly reach 200 miles per hour. Regarded by falconers and biologists alike as one of the noblest and most spectacular of all birds of prey.

What is a peregrine falcon?

The peregrine falcon is a bird of prey. It got its name from the Latin word “peregrinus” which means “wanderer”. The falcon was named by Pliny the Elder, who wrote about it in his book Natural History. Peregrine Falcons are Everywhere Except Antarctica. Peregrine Falcons are one of the most widespread bird species in the world.
Falco peregrinus anatum, described by Bonaparte in 1838, is known as the American peregrine falcon, or “duck hawk”; its scientific name means “duck peregrine falcon”. At one time, it was partly included in leucogenys.
Where does Falco peregrinus babylonicus live?
Falco peregrinus babylonicus, described by P.L. Sclater in 1861, is found in eastern Iran along the Hindu Kush and the Tian Shan to the Mongolian Altai ranges. A few birds winter in northern and northwestern India, mainly in dry semi-desert habitats.

What does a peregrine falcon look like?
Peregrine falcons are quick, large predatory raptors. The falcon’s strong, sharp yellow talons allow it to capture other birds, even while in flight. Peregrine falcons can be hard to identify because of their quick flight and camouflage coloring.

Why is the peregrine falcon endangered?

Regarded by falconers and biologists alike as one of the noblest and most spectacular of all birds of prey. Although it is found on six continents, the Peregrine is uncommon in most areas; it was seriously endangered in the mid-20th century because of the effects of DDT and other persistent pesticides.

Where do peregrine falcons build their nests?

Breeding Peregrines defend the immediate area of the nest from intruders, but hunt over a much larger area. Nest site is usually on cliff ledge, sometimes in hollow of broken-off tree snag or in old stick nest of other large bird in tree. In some areas, may nest on ground on hilltop.

Not only do the adults die, but their offspring cannot develop in the egg. Since the banning of DDT in the 1970s, peregrine falcons have steadily increased to the level that they are no longer federally listed on the endangered species list. The peregrine falcon is the world’s fastest diving bird.
