How did Juan Cabrillo die?​

In an attempt to rescue his men who were under attack by natives, Cabrillo splintered his ankle. The injury did not heal and became infected. Juan Cabrillo died on January 3, 1543, and was probably buried on one of the Channel Islands.

Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo is best known for being the first European to successfully navigate the Pacific coast of what is today California to points north of the San Francisco Bay. During the voyage, he and his men disembarked at several points and made direct contact with the Native American inhabitants of the coast and Channel Islands.

How did the Cabrillo family make their money?​

As the Cabrillo family grew, so did his wealth and reputation as a ship builder. Using a port on Guatemala’s Pacific Coast, Cabrillo imported and exported goods in the developing trade between Guatemala, Spain, and other parts of the New World.
He returned to Catalina Island on Nov. 23, 1542. There, on Christmas Day, Tongva tribe members attacked an onshore party. Cabrillo rushed ashore and in leaping from a small boat, splintered his shin when he stumbled onto a jagged rock. The wound became infected and he died of gangrene on Jan. 3, 1543.
