How common are Merle Cocker Spaniels?

It used to be very unusual to find American Cocker Spaniels with merle coats, but over the last 10 or 15 years it has become more common… as the puppy mills started to get in to breeding merles in a big way, once they found they could get more money for what was perceived as a “rare” color of Cocker.

Can a cocker spaniel be a chocolate Parti?

If this dog did not have the merle gene, he would be a chocolate parti… but the merle gene has caused all but some small patches of his chocolate fur to be diluted to a tan color. While the merle coat pattern is very uncommon in American Cocker Spaniels, it’s not at all uncommon in several other breeds.

Why do Cocker Spaniels have eye and ear problems?
Maeder visits two veterinarians in two different areas 100 miles apart. Both vets tell her the merle gene causes eye and ear issues. The problem with the merle pattern in Cocker Spaniels “is that it more likely entered the gene pool by way of crossing with a merle dog of another breed,” according to Dr. Coile.

What was the original name of the cocker spaniel?

History. Records from the mid-14th century show that selective breeding was already in place, with the breed being separated into two distinct types, called water spaniels and land spaniels. By 1801, the smaller variety of land spaniel was called the Cocker or Cocking Spaniel, so named for its use in flushing woodcock.

What does a Merle Cocker look like at birth?

Cockers with merle coats display their unusual markings from day one. Cockers with roan coats don’t look unusual at birth but slowly grow in to their unique coat coloring. The picture on the right is the same dog pictured above, but here he’s just a day or two old.

Merle Cocker Spaniels have become more common in recent years, with some breeders specifically breeding for this coat color due to its perceived rarity and appeal. However, it's important to note that the merle coat pattern is not a standard color in American Cocker Spaniels and can come with health risks, such as potential eye and ear issues. The merle gene, when introduced into the gene pool through crossbreeding with merle dogs from other breeds, can increase the likelihood of these health problems.

When it comes to the appearance of Merle Cocker Spaniels, they can exhibit a variety of coat colors and patterns. Not all Merle Cockers will have blue eyes; some may have this unique feature, while others may not. Each Merle Cocker can have its own distinct coloring, which may include blue eyes like Bella, a Chocolate Merle parti girl, or Gracie, a Red/White female.

Cocker Spaniels, in general, are prone to eye and ear problems, which can be linked to various factors, including genetics and breeding practices. The Merle gene, when present, can potentially contribute to these health issues. It's essential for owners and breeders to be aware of these risks and to prioritize the health and well-being of their dogs.

Regarding the history of the Cocker Spaniel breed, it has a long lineage dating back to the mid-14th century when selective breeding began. Originally known as land spaniels or Cocker Spaniels, these dogs were bred for specific tasks such as flushing woodcock. Over time, the breed evolved into distinct types and sizes, with the smaller variety being named the Cocker or Cocking Spaniel by 1801.

At birth, Merle Cocker Spaniels can already display their unique coat patterns, distinguishing them from other coat colors such as roan. While Cockers with roan coats may not look unusual at birth and develop their coloring gradually, Merle Cockers showcase their distinctive markings from day one, as seen in the provided image of a newborn Merle Cocker Spaniel.
